Intermediate Etching: Alternative Etches & Sculptural Manipulations

In Intermediate Etching, students build upon basic intaglio skills. They develop curious plates that prompt the question ‘how did they do that?’ We will explore a variety of grounds and materials that expand beyond the drawn line. These methods include soft ground etching of found matter, spray paint aquatint with positive and negative resists, sugar lift, and more. Sculptural Manipulations include hand-cutting plates, scraping and burnishing, and Dremel (electric rotary tool) drypoint. These methods prepare students for experimental etching and more advanced techniques.

All supplies will be provided for this course.
