Preamble is a show of monotypes and one pencil drawing that chart the material, formal, and thematic evolution of Todd Stong's artistic practice over the last decade. With work from his undergraduate introduction to monotype printmaking at RISD and Brown, from his time at Penland School of Crafts and as a FOB Holder at Second State Press, and finally from his graduate studies at Temple University Rome, the show traces a gradual but not unwavering shift from a pictographic visual strategy to a fully fledged narrative illusionism. Finally, the show provides context for work on view in Stong's solo exhibition Becoming Hole, on view upstairs at PEEP Projects, which centers around the construction of a sculpture park dedicated to the art historical figure Johann Joachim Winckelmann. Please join us for the opening reception Thursday, June 13, from 6-9pm.
