Edge vs. Oblivion: Francine Affourtit, 2014 CRE Fellow
Second Thursday Reception: April 9th, 6 PM to 9 PM, work on view through May 17th
Second State Press is pleased to present “Edge vs. Oblivion” by Francine K. Affourtit, the 2014 recipient of the Cindi R. Ettinger Fellowship. The works on view in the exhibition were created during or inspired by her month-long residency at Second State Press this past July. Francine’s proposal to investigate strategies for producing large-scale woodcut prints from a small press bed developed into an exploration of the conceptual pairing of method and form.
The artist states: “My practice converges at the intersection of language, systems, and the methodology of printmaking as a means for developing structures where chance and control can dance in a rhythmic duet. By tackling the technical obstruction of press size by folding large sheets of paper through a smaller press bed, I began an investigation into the symbiotic relationship of paper and matrix. In this series, the paper takes and integral role in the composition: The shifting planes of folded paper, both real and illusionary, form both the technical scaffolding of the work and the aesthetic and conceptual contemplation of trace, fold, profundity, edge and void.”

May Workshop Theme- Prints Go
Instructor: Lauren Pakradooni
How do you get in, out, and all around town? In this two hour workshop we will discuss all of the fun ways we move around our community! Using a variety of printmaking techniques we will create our own sculptural buses and trollies. Families can work together to make something truly special and their own transportation fleet. Each participant will walk away with their own unique print. Suitable for ages 6 & up.
Quarter Sheet Challenge Artist: Lauren Pakradooni
Lauren Pakradooni has accepted the Second State Press Quarter Sheet Challenge! Her prints will be on view May-June.
Lauren Pakradooni holds an MFA in printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design. Lauren’s interdisciplinary work incorporates drawing, printmaking, painting, sculpture, installation, performance, and sound. She gravitates towards exploring space, making use of the graphic qualities of print, enveloping character of sound, and the literal space of sculpture and performance. She has exhibited and performed her work internationally, holding residencies at the Virginia Commonwealth University, Doha, Qatar, The Wassaic Project in Wassaic, NY, and most recently AS220 in Providence, RI. She has been a Member of Second State Press since moving to Philadelphia.
Recently, my working process has referenced the role of prints as carriers of design, such as the power of engravings to illustrate imagined interior environments and intricate decoration. My prints explore architectural elements and interior space as they encounter an obstacle or obstruction. Working in monotype, these images work to both camouflage and highlight forms in pace, shifting between shape and shadow.
Each month we will feature a new artist in this on going exhibition series. The one requirement? Prints must be quarter sheet prints (15″ x 11″). Email email@example.com for more information.
