Letterpress 1: The Basics of Printing

After a brief demonstration of printing on the tabletop C&P Pilot press, students will learn to compose metal type from one or two sentences of their own writing, or a favorite pithy quote.

Proofreading, corrections, and locking up the type in the chase will follow.

A test print will be taken, with adjustents made to impression, packing, inking, and alignment. Once approved, 5-10 copies will be printed, exchanged with fellow students, and one held for the archives of Second State Press.

Throughout the class-time stories will be shared, arcane knowledge revealed, and you will simmer in the alchemy of using your hands to create a physical form of your thoughts.

You’ll acquire some insight into why Ben Franklin ran away from his printing apprenticeship in Boston, landing in Philadelphia.

And, not incidentally, you will gain the wherewithal to win your next cocktail party!

Wear clothes to get inky!
